Misconceptions

allah_names.gif

This page is primarily meant to dispel the misconceptions and doubt about Islam. The anti Islamic lobbies are busy in presenting the worst image of Islam before the world and presenting it as the religion that has no relevance with the present time, a religion that encourages aggression and hostility, a religion that suppresses women, and this list of allegations goes on and on. Although most of these misconceptions have been spread by anti Islamic lobbies, such doubts may come to a believers mind as well, and may become strong enough to defile his faith.

DEGRADATION OF MANY PROPHETS IN BIBLE

Although Jews and Muslims are archenemies yet no Muslim would dare to write a book and stamp any Israelite Prophet like Judah, David, Jesus etc. (Allahs blessings and peace be upon all of them forever and ever) with rape, incest, adultery or prostitution. However, in the present day Bible there exists degradation of many Prophets as worshippers of false gods and accusing them of incest, rape and adultery!!!! Allah forbids it. The proofs of such are given from the Bible itself
Holy Prophet Noah (A.S) is shown to have been drunk to the point of becoming naked in the presence of his grown-up sons. Shamefully it comes in Genesis 9:23-24
" And Shem and Japhet took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward and covered the nakedness of their father, and their faces were backward, and they saw not their fathers nakedness. And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him "
Holy Prophet Solomon (A.S) was not only accused of having a large harem but also of worshipping false gods .It comes in I King 11:9-10
"And the Lord was angry with Solomonand had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods: but he kept not that which the Lord commanded "
Holy Prophet Aaron (A.S) who had accompanied his brother Moses to go to Pharaoh was excused of having fashioned the golden calf for the Israelites to worship. Exodus 32:4
"And he [Aaron] received them [golden earrings] at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a golden calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt "
Holy Prophet Lots incest with his two daughters can be read in Genesis 19:36
"Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child their father "
Holy Prophet Jacob was accused of being married to two sisters at the same time. Genesis 29:28
"And Jacob did so and fulfilled her week: and he [Laban] gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also "
Holy Prophet David was accused of adultery .II Samuel 11:4-5
"And David sent messengers, and took her [the wife of Uriah]; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness; and she returned unto her house. And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child "
The question is: How could Holy Prophet David be accepted in the genealogy of Jesus when it started with a person who committed adultery? Allah forbids it! It is in contradiction to what is mentioned in another place in Bible Deuteronomy 23:2
" A bastard shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord; even to the tenth shall he not enter into the congregation of the Lord "
Another allegation of incest along with rape, by Ammon the son of David on his half sister Tamar comes in II Samuel 13:14
"Howbeit he [Ammon] would not hearken unto her voice: but being stronger than her [Tamar], forced her, and lay with her "
Another multiple rape, by Absalom on Davids concubines, was told in II Samuel 16:33
" So they spread Absalom a tent upon the top of the house, and Absalom went in unto his fathers Concubines in the sight of all Israel "
Allah forbids it!! Not even any barbarian in the world would do this!!!
Another incest by Judah and Tamar his daughter in law: Judah on his way to Timnath to shear his sheep saw Tamar; he thought her to be a harlot because she had her face covered (Genesis 38:18)
. And he [Judah] gave it [signet, bracelet and staff] her, and came in unto her and she conceived by him "
It seems as if the changes in the Bible were made to imply that Allah had sent the wrong people for guidance.

INHERITANCE

A man in his life has absolute power to spend or dispose off his property, as he likes. Nor is his right detracted by any distinction between acquired and inherited wealth. But he cannot make legacy about it beyond one-third. No legacy is to be made in favour of the shares, reducing or increasing the share of his relatives. It is said

Surely Allah has given to everyone entitled to anything his due, therefore there shall be no bequest for one who inherits.

After paying off the debts of the deceased and legacies which dont exceed one-third of what he has left and are not made in favour of any of his inheritors, his property is to be divided, so that the shares of the parents and husband or wife shall be taken out first. The parents will get one-sixth each, if the deceased has no issue nor brothers or sisters. The mother takes one-third; the remaining two-thirds go to the father. If the deceased has no issue but has brothers or sisters mother gets one-sixth.

After paying off the shares of the parents and husbands or wives, the rest of the property goes to the children, the son having double the share of the daughter.

By providing shares for the daughters, sisters, mothers and wives it makes women active participant in the economic activities. She can own and possess, enter into professions and enter into contracts in her own name. Whatever she earns or inherits is her own and she is not obliged to give it away to anyone.

If a woman is married, her husband is responsible for her livelihood as well as that of her children. A woman isnt duty bound to maintain her husband or her children. Of course she can help her husband in any possible way. For this reason Islam gives man double the share of woman. Giving man equalizes the inequality of the burden double the share of woman in matter of inheritance. In Islam a woman retains her own identity, she cant be said to be a burden upon the society.

In a society consisting of middle class people, as a matter of fact, in most of the families of today, the up bringing of a girl costs more than that of a boy and it takes large part of riches of an ordinary man to give his daughter in marriage. Again in her husbands property she gets a share and in the property of her children and relatives too.

This half share was given to women in Islam at a time when no religion or community gave anything to women by way of inheritance.

POLYGAMY

Man is permitted to marry four wives at a time in Islam and woman is prohibited from marrying more than one. Apparently there is no justification for this rule. But when we consider the great disparity in the number of two sexes caused by repeated wars because of the large number of male casualties, we see some justification for this differentiation.

Polygamy has been permitted in Islam as a solution to social problems that may not have any other satisfactory solution. Take, for example, the case of a woman who has a chronic illness that makes her unable to satisfy her husband's needs. Rather than divorce her, her husband is allowed to have a second wife. Other examples can be given in which marriage with a second wife provides a better solution to a problem than any other alternative.

There is an important condition for a second or third marriage, namely that the husband should treat his wives with absolute fairness and equality. If he feels that he may not be able to do that, then he must not take a second wife. This is only permission in extra-ordinary circumstances and not a requirement of the Islamic Law.
Sometimes there is a question that whether it is permissible for a man who is married to a Muslim wife to choose a Christian for his second wife. The answer is that it is permissible, but far from recommended. What we have also to understand is that Islam may permit certain things but it advises its followers against resorting to them. We know that divorce is permissible, but is one legal thing that Allah dislikes most. Allah would not have allowed it, had it not been for the fact that there is a certain social need for its legality. The same applies to marrying a woman who adheres to another faith. The problems that may arise in such a marriage are enormous, but it has been legalized nevertheless because there are circumstances which make it the most practical solution

In the matter of divorce, the power of divorce is given to the husband and not to the wife. This permission, given by Quran, is a great boon to the humanity. The Mahr (Dowry) is usually fixed so high that a man thinks hundred times before divorcing his wife. Those who divorce their wives have to shell out such large sums of money that they are practically ruined.

POLYGAMY IS NOT A SUNNAH

Normally people give several arguments to support the view that polygamy is a Sunnah recommended to us by the Prophet by action, if not by word. They seem to take for granted that it is in the nature of man to have more than one woman.
It must be cleared that man is not polygamous by nature. Had it been so, Allah would have changed the proportion of male to female among mankind to allow polygamy to be widely practiced. The fact that the male to female ratio is, more or less, one is to one, albeit with slight variations in different societies, is ample proof that the normal situation is for each man to have one wife. It is a fact of life that when there is a large increase in the number of women over men in a particular society, polygamy flourishes. If that society does not allow polygamy, you will find that the ratio of divorce and second marriages increases sharply. If that society is lax in observing moral values, indecency spreads.
Sunnah means an action that the Prophet has either encouraged or recommended by word or deed or approval. We can say that a Sunnah is a recommended action that earns reward from Allah. A Sunnah may relate to religious duties and to ordinary activities.
When such actions are backed by verbal instructions, then the action requires a stronger status that could raise it to be an obligatory one. If the Prophet did something in practice but gave specific instructions that vary somewhat from his practice, we should take the verbal instructions as having more weight. For example, the Prophet used to recite long passages from the Qur'an in Fajr prayer. He, however, instructed one of his companions who led the prayer among his people to read surahs or passages of about 12 or 13 lines. Hence, Sunnah is to read such medium length passages, unless one is praying alone or with a small group of people who are all willing to have a lengthy prayer.
In his normal daily life, the Prophet may have done certain actions in a particular way. That does not mean that they constitute a Sunnah, unless he has backed these with a verbal recommendation or instruction. We know, for example, that the Prophet liked to eat pumpkins. Is it a Sunnah to eat them? What if a person does not like their taste? Is he at fault? The answer is that it is not a Sunnah to eat pumpkins and a person who goes through life without tasting pumpkins misses no reward and will not be asked about this omission, as it were. Otherwise, you would have seen vast areas of agricultural land in the Muslim world devoted to planting pumpkins so that all Muslims may follow the example of the Prophet. This is not the case, because Allah knows that He has created people with different tastes and many of them may not like the taste of pumpkins.
These are very clear examples. There are many similar ones. The fact that the Prophet married several wives falls within this category. We have no Hadith or statement by the Prophet to suggest that marrying more than one woman is recommended. No companion of the Prophet tells us that the Prophet questioned him about having only one wife or suggested to him that he should marry again. That always came from the man himself. On the other hand, the Prophet did not persuade any of his companions not to marry a second time. Therefore, we can say that this is a question left to the individual; he may marry two or three or four women, but it is open to him to limit his marriage to one woman. Indeed, this is better, because he will not expose himself to the risk of not maintaining justice between his wives.
Moreover, we cannot argue that since the Prophet married so many wives, polygamy is a Sunnah. There are two important reasons for that: the first is the fact that the Prophet lived with his first wife for 25 years without marrying a second woman. Ten of these 25 years were after he became a Prophet. It is only in the last ten years or so of his life that he was married to more than one wife. Which one of the two situations is a Sunnah? If we say that it is the latter, can we support our view with any statement that shows that the Prophet considered that the latter situation was preferable to the first? Indeed, he always remembered his days with Khadeejah with more compassion and a loving memory.
Perhaps third point in support of monogamy should be added here. It is more conducive to the happiness of a family that a man be married to one woman. He is also more likely to be able to provide a sound upbringing for his children and more likely to make his wife happy and, as a result of both these factors, he is more likely to be happy himself.
